Dr. Jeff P. Jones is a licensed clinical psychologist and AASP certified consultant (#139) in Sport Psychology.  He works with individuals, couples and families in his private practice in Solana Beach, California.  For the last 17 years, Dr. Jones has primarily worked with high school, college athletes and Olympians in addition to professional athletes from a variety of sports. The athletes have ranged in age from pre-teens (12 years) to adults in their early 40’s.

As recently as January 2013, Dr. Jones started working as an independent consultant to athletes and coaches training at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Dr. Jones’s initial exposure to mental skills training and his subsequent interest in Sport Psychology started in high school when his football coach introduced the team in his senior season to relaxation training, guided imagery, and yoga (stretching).  Prior to his graduate studies, Dr. Jones took his first sport psychology class at UCSD as an undergraduate and applied some of what he learned to his play as an intercollegiate and club rugby player.  Dr. Jones’s dream to play for the national rugby team was cut short by an ACL knee injury.  To facilitate his recovery from reconstructive knee surgery, he utilized goal setting and positive imagery in his physical rehabilitation.  Injuring his knee served as a catalyst for starting his graduate studies in clinical psychology and sport psychology at California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego (now Alliant University in San Diego). Dr. Jones’s doctoral dissertation was in the area of behavioral coaching as applied to beginner and novice volleyball players.  After completing his Ph.D. at CSPP-SD, he joined the staff of the University of San Diego Counseling Center (USDCC) and was fortunate to work with a variety of intercollegiate Division I teams (women’s swimming, tennis, volleyball, basketball) and individual athletes.  Dr. Jones continued his sport psychology consulting work when he joined the UCSD Counseling & Psychological Services staff.

In conjunction with the UCSD Athletic Department Dr. Jones worked with a wide variety of individual athletes (golfers, fencers, volleyball, soccer, etc.) and coaches competing at the Division II level. Since 1997, Dr. Jones has been a member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), American Psychological Association (APA) Division 47 Exercise and Sport Psychology, and the USOC Sport Psychology Registry.  On numerous occasions, Dr. Jones and Dr. Colgan have spoken to athletes and teams at San Diego State University (SDSU), University of San Diego, (USD), and UC San Diego.
